Hypertension and atrial fibrillation (AF) two causes of preventable stroke encountered in clinical practice. In this webinar, Dr. Manuel Zacarias (University of Sto. Tomas) discussed the management of patients with hypertension or AF to prevent stroke and minimize adverse patient outcomes. He shared the standards of care in hypertension management as prescribed by various international guidelines and the role of telmisartan in effective hypertension management. Dr. Jorge Sison then highlighted the role of effective anticoagulation in the prevention of stroke in patients with AF, the limitations of vitamin K antagonists, and the growing role of NOACs including dabigatran.

 

About the speakers

Dr. Manuel Zacarias heads the Heart Station of University of Santo Tomas (UST) Hospital and is a retired Professor of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of UST. He was also a former Chief of the Section of Cardiology of the same institution.

Dr. Jorge Sison is consultant in adult cardiology at the Makati Medical Center and Medical Center Manila (MCM). He is a Past President of the Philippine Heart Association, a Past Chairman of the Department of Medicine of MCM, and Past Head of the Cardiology Section of the same institution.
